The phrase m-Commerce brings back fond memories of five-star hotels, lofty valuations based on ‘stickiness’ and ‘eyeballs’, and my hopes of becoming an instant millionaire as a twenty-something software developer.
Today, however, m-Commerce actually means something. The infrastructure for premium SMS is in place in the US and can be used to make money. Granted, there are barriers: carriers are taking a disproportionate share of any premium SMS revenues, and the average consumer still has difficulty typing a text message. But young folks are incredibly comfortable tapping messages to each other. And there are some great examples from overseas on how to make premium SMS work.
